Dysport® is an FDA-approved treatment that is commonly used to reduce the appearance of motion-related wrinkles in the upper face, such as frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines. With a chemical composition similar to BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport has been widely used around the world and gained approval in the U.S. in 2009. It has been proven to be a safe and highly effective way to improve facial wrinkles with results that are equivalent in many cases to those achieved with BOTOX®.
How Does Dysport® Work?
Dysport®, similar to BOTOX® Cosmetic, is an injectable prescription drug used for the treatment of facial lines and wrinkles. It is formulated with botulinum toxin A, which blocks communication between facial muscles and the nervous system, in turn preventing the targeted muscles from contracting. By minimizing muscle movement, Dysport® relaxes and smooths the overlying skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Dysport® vs BOTOX®
Although Dysport® and BOTOX® are similar, they are not exactly the same, and Dysport® offers a few potential advantages.
Both Dysport® and BOTOX® contain proteins that trigger your body to produce antibodies to break down the newly injected treatment. Dysport® contains smaller protein molecules that produce less antibodies, which means Dysport® can potentially have longer-lasting results than BOTOX®.
Compared to BOTOX®, Dysport® spreads out more from its injection point. This is beneficial when treating larger areas like forehead lines, and areas with thin, delicate muscles, such as the crows’ feet. More spreading means fewer injections may be needed to achieve desired results.
Dysport® results are often visible sooner than those achieved with BOTOX®, and patients who have not had success with BOTOX® often see results when treated with Dysport® injections.
What Does Dysport® Treat?
Dysport® is used to reduce the appearance of frown lines—the wrinkles between the brows that are also known as glabellar lines. Dysport® is also used to smooth horizontal forehead lines and crow’s feet around the eyelids. Boca Raton occuloplastic surgeon Dr. Steven Fagien may also use Dysport in combination with injectable fillers to treat facial and eyelid aging. He will explain at the consultation how Dysport® is ideally suited to each individual patient.
Are There Any Side Effects With Dysport®?
Similar to BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport® side effects are generally very minimal. Long-term studies have shown that Dysport is extremely safe, but as with any medical treatment every patient may react differently. To minimize risks, side effects and unwanted outcomes, choose a qualified cosmetic surgeon with extensive experience using Dysport. Dr. Steven Fagien is highly experienced in the use of Dysport to treat facial aging.
