Canthoplasty

What Is Canthoplasty?
Canthoplasty is a surgical technique used to lift the outer corners of the eyes, correct drooping eyelids and provide extra eyelid support after upper or lower blepharoplasty. Canthoplasty is ideal for improved a tired or sad expression and creating a more youthful look to the eye area.
Canthoplasty can tighten a saggy, loose lower eyelid, and reshape and reposition the lateral canthus. This procedure uses an incision in the outer corner of the eyelid to reconstruct the weakened or stretched canthal tendon that anchors the lower eyelid, which in turn elevates the outer corners of the eyes and improves their overall shape. In some cases, Boca Raton oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Steven Fagien may also address excess skin and fat during the procedure for optimal results.
Dr. Fagien uses a minimally invasive approach for lateral canthal procedures and tightening the lower eyelid to achieve better eye skin contour with hidden scars. Lateral canthoplasty can also be helpful for patients who have had prior lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty) with retracted (pulled down) lower eyelids and rounded canthus. This technique can be used to repair an overdone or surgical appearance to the eyes.
What Does Canthoplasty Treat?
Canthoplasty is used to correct several medical and cosmetic conditions, including ectropion, drooping and sagging of the lower eyelids. It may also be used to correct deformities caused by trauma, disease, or previous eyelid surgery.
Ectropion
Ectropion is a condition in which the lower eyelid sags away from the eye and exposes the inner eyelid and the surface of the eye. This can lead to dryness, irritation and increased risk of infection. Ectropion is more common in older adults, but trauma or overexposure to sunlight can cause ectropion in younger patients. Canthoplasty is the only effective procedure for correcting this condition.
Drooping or Sagging Eyelids
The main cause of drooping or sagging of the lower eyelids is the age-related loss of collagen and accumulated sun damage. When performed by an experienced eye surgeon, canthoplasty can improve tissue laxity and restore a more youthful appearance to the eye area.
